Kyra Sedgwick

Bacon and Sedgwick are tonight's celebrities on this episode of "Finding Your Roots". Kevin and Kyra are husband and wife. Mr. Gates tells us he never researched for a husband and wife before. Again tonight we have the paper trail done by genealogists and DNA by a genetists.

We start With Kyra Sedgwick's family. Harry Sedgwick and Patricia Rosenwahl are her parents. Her Uncle John Sedgwick is the family story teller and we learn much from him about his English ancestry. Kyra's immigrant ancestor came to New England in 1636, from England.

The family has been prominent and lived in New England ever since. Mr. Theodore S. Sedgwick was Kyra's 4th gr-grandfather. He was a judge, a state congressman, state senator and was a the speaker of the house at Continental Congress. Also a well known writer.

One day he was approached by a slave named Mumbet, who had heard the "Declaration of Independence" read out loud. She said if all men are equal she wanted her freedom and she wanted the judge to take her case. He did and the jury agreed with Mumbet. Mumbet became of free person.

DNA testing proved that Kyra was 50% Jewish on her mother's side.
