Check out church Repositories when doing family searching. One or more of your ancestors could be there.

The following list is just a very few resources for location of birth records, marriage and death records among the various religious communities. All the repositories that I listed are on the internet and you can visit their websites for more information.
I chose different states and areas of the United States to give you an idea where different church records can be found.

ALABAMA:

Alabama Archives has all denominations. Check Samford University in Birmingham for Baptist Church Records.

CALIFORNIA:

Western Jewish History Center in Berkeley.
Hebrew Union College Library in Los Angeles.

Archdiocese of San Francisco in Colma for Catholic records.
Santa Barbara Mission Archives again for Catholic records.

School of Theology at Claremont for Methodist and Protestant Episcopal records.

Center for Mennonite Brethren Studies, Fresno, California. The center is part of Fresno Pacific University.

Registrar of the Greek Orthodox Diocese of San Francisco has records for the following
states: AK, AZ, CA, HI, NV, OR, WA, these records come from 1979 forward.

GEORGIA:

Georgia Archives have churches and synagogue records.

Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA. has records for the Presbyterian churches.

Thomas College in Thomasville has church histories.

Registrar of Greek Orthodox Diocese of Atlanta has records for these states:
AL, FL, GA, MS, NC, SC, TN the records start in 1979 and come forward.

HAWAII:

Hawaii Archives, records for the Episcopal Church in Hawaii.
Hawaii Roman Catholic Diocese in Honolulu, has some parish and diocesan records.

MINNESOTA:

Minnesota Historical Society has original and copies of church records.

Bethel Theological Seminary in Arden Hills has Baptist records.

United Methodist Church Archives in Minneapolis, MN.

Luther Norwestern Seminary in St. Paul, MN. has Lutheran church records.

NEW YORK:

New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, has mostly protestant denominations for the Manhatten area.

New York Public Library in genealogy section has church records for the entire state of New York.
