The above photo was by Jim Frazier.Family genealogy research via television: "Faces of America" has now ended, keep an eye out for re-runsPBS will probably re-run during the summer season. The above mentioned series hopefully is a warm up for NBCs' series: "Who Do You Think You Are". The first episode airs Friday March 5, 2010 at 8 p.m. eastern time and7 p.m. central standard time. I hope you give this program a try and have pencil and paper handy to takenotes. This can make your ancestry and genealogy research more exciting. Whoknows maybe a well known person might have descended from one of your lines!
I watched the first episode of "Who Do You Think You Are".
It was interesting but a little misleading.
First in a commercial for Ancestry.com the lady says "you don't have to know anything, just go to Ancestry.com". Incorrect statement, there is so much data on Ancestry that you would be
confused right off. Plus you have to know who you are searching
for etc.
Second do not get the impression that you will have to travel to
these places and talk to the specialist in order to find your
information.
The people who will be doing their family genealogy research are all celebrities and are probably being paid to do this program.
The first 3 shows have had Sarah Jessica Parker, who found out
an ancestor was accused of being a witch during the "Salem
Witch Trials", in Massachursetts.
Next show had Emmit Smith, who discovered that one of his lines
were descended from slaves and went to Africa to learn more.
The third show had Lisa Kudrow who was searching her father's
Jewish line went to Poland to fine out what happened to one of
her ancestors during the "Holocaust".
Tonight March 26th was Matthew Broderick, who first checked into
his paternal grandfather's line and learned he served during
WWI in LeHavre, France in the medical corp. Do to being wounded
Matthew's grandfather receipt the "Purple Heart" and France gave
him I believe it was the "Legioner's Cross" there highest medal.
Next he went to his paternal grandmother's side and discovered
he had a great-greatgrandfather serve in the Civil War and that
this man not only served at the Battle of "Gettysburg" and other
battles but near Marietta, Georgia. This the vicinity where Matthew appeared in the movie "Glory" over 100 years after the
civil war.
Tonight's episode showed Matthew going to: National Archives, New
York City, one of the branches in the Northeast Region to do his family genealogy research; then to State Archives for the State of Conneticut, where he looked at the Federal Census Records.
When Matthew spoke with his sister she also mentioned checking with the Veterans' Administration. These are resources you will become familiar with if you haven't all ready.
Also be careful when you come across sensitive information,
while doing your family genealogy research.
Tonight celebrity Brooke Shields was looking into her family genealogy research on both her mother and father's side. She started with her mother's mother and found out her grandmother lost her mother at age 10. It was also noted on somebirth certificates how many children the mother all ready hadgiven birth to. Brooke never new her grandmother had 2 youngerbrothers, unfortunately both died as children. She next started checking into her father's Italian family andsoon discovered the Italian line was born French. Brooke wentto Italy then France to discover the aristoracy in her family.Tonight more mention was made about birth and death certificatesand records. Always try to look at the original records, notevery document is created the same. Friday April 23rd Episode: Tonight's celebrity was actress Susan Sarandon. Susan was finding out about her mother's mother. Susan first asked her mother a few questions before proceeding further. Susan went to a couple different libraries to do family genealogy research to find information as well astalking with genealogists and historians. Here are a couple items Susan Sarandon discovered and you may runacross a similiar issue. Her grandmother had a difficult young life, lost her mother at age 10 or 11 was married and pregnant by age 13. She had 2 children and something happened and she lefther husband and children. At age 15 Susan's mother saw her mother for the first time in years and last time in her life. Susan's grandmother remarried about 1932 and it was found that she was not divorced from her first husband. Also this secondmarriage did not last. She again married about 1939 and it lookslike there was a divorce at the time and she married again forthe 3rd time, this marriage lasted about 35 years. Susan's grandmother lived until 1984. This makes you ask the question why did she leave her children behind? Why didn't she contact them when her children were adults? Note: The first episode of Who Do You Think Season 3, was broadcast Friday Feb. 3, 2012, with celebrity Martin Sheen. His birth name is Ramon Gerard Estevez. Excellent program. Keep working on your genealogy research and enjoy the ride.
