Great Lakes Archives is located in Chicago, Ill. This facility houses records for Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin. Great Lakes Region also has Federal Record Centers, one in Chicago and two in Dayton, Ohio.

The archives in Chicago has a microfilm research room and an archival research room for genealogy research and other interests such as history. The historical records date from 1800 thru the 1990s', including textual records and non- textual records such as maps and photographs from Federal courts and some 85 Federal agencies in: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin.

A few of the historical names in the records are: Aron Burr, Abraham Lincoln, Al Capone and Abbie Hoffman.

A few of the topics: African American History, Chicago and Regional History, Depression Era, Organized Crime, Popular Culture and much more.

Some of the records on microfilm are: 54th Massachusetts Infantry (from the movie Glory); Appellate Case Files of Brown vs Board of Education; Captured World War II German Records and Maritime History.

The Chicago facility is also open on the second Saturday of each month.
